The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the East
Mirkwood was once called Greenwood the Great, the mighty forest that lay in the lands east of the River Anduin. After the Necromancer took up his abode at Dol Guldur in the forest’s southern region, the trees’ shadows deepened and evil creatures crept into the forest, earning it its current name.
Two independent realms co-exist beneath the eaves of Mirkwood’s trees. The Silvan Elves of King Thranduil wander the northernmost reaches of the forest, while the rustic Woodmen occupy the regions bordering the Men-i-Naugrim. The southernmost portion of Mirkwood remains a wild land avoided by all but shadows and beasts.
